Xero has launched a connected app for Google‘s Gemini assistant that lets small businesses, accountants and bookkeepers pull live figures from their Xero books into a Gemini chat and complete routine tasks there. The company announced the integration on October 14 and said it is the first financial management platform to launch a connected app for Gemini.
The app is not available everywhere. A footnote to a Xero blog post published October 17 says it is available wherever Gemini Apps are supported, except in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
What users can ask
According to Xero, users can generate profit and loss statements, track income and expenses, and check balance sheets and cash position. On the sales side, the app can find overdue balances, draft invoice summaries, track high-revenue clients and manage recurring subscriptions. For payables, it tracks outstanding bills, flags overdue ones and surfaces vendor payment requirements. It can also draw charts in the chat, such as profit and loss graphs and aged receivables, and retrieve organization details, base currency and customer and supplier contacts.
Accountants and bookkeepers can switch between their practice’s client organizations. The October 17 blog post says one sign-in connects a whole client portfolio to the integration in use.
The integration runs on JAX, Xero’s agentic platform. Any operation that modifies financial data, such as issuing an invoice or sending a payment reminder, requires explicit user confirmation in Xero’s connected app before it runs. Xero said financial information shared between the platforms is used solely for the user’s session and that Xero data is not used to train Google Gemini models.
“Connecting Xero financial data into Gemini conversations helps small businesses and their accountants and bookkeepers instantly check their financial position, track cash flow and manage invoices and bills, all without breaking their workflow,” said Diya Jolly, President of Product & Technology at Xero.
Scheduled tasks to follow
Xero said that, “coming soon,” customers on eligible plans will be able to do more through the task toggle in the Gemini app. Its examples include combining Xero and Gmail to prepare follow-ups on overdue invoices, and a daily summary of pending bills and cash position. The company did not say which plans qualify or give a date.
On Google’s side, a Google post dated October 13 said Gemini now connects to more than 40 apps, including Instacart, OpenTable, Adobe and Shopify, and that Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can give Gemini tasks. That post does not mention Xero.
Gemini joins Xero’s existing integrations with Microsoft 365, Claude, Claude for Small Business and ChatGPT, according to the release.
A remote MCP server for developers
A day after the Gemini announcement, Xero’s developer changelog recorded the launch of a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server as a new tool in its AI toolkit. The server offers 39 tools covering invoicing, accounting, reporting and payments, and is available to commercial apps on Core or above.
The same changelog lists other October changes for app builders. An October 8 entry says Xero will enforce matching contacts when credit notes, prepayments and overpayments are allocated to invoices or bills, so mismatched requests return a validation error. An October 15 entry describes a change targeted for January 14, 2027, under which the invoice email endpoint will return a “429 Too Many Requests” response when a daily limit is hit, instead of a generic 500 error.
Why it matters
For small firms and their advisors, the integration moves routine reporting questions out of the accounting app and into a general-purpose AI assistant. Anurag Agrawal, founder and chief global analyst at research firm Techaisle, said in Xero’s release that accountants and bookkeepers can ask Gemini for a client’s profit and loss, aged receivables or cash position “and get the answer, charted, from live Xero data.”
The regional exclusions mean Xero users in the UK, the European Economic Area, Switzerland and Nigeria cannot use the Gemini app, and Xero’s posts do not give a reason or a timeline for those markets. The confirmation step for changes to financial data and the commitment on model training are the main controls Xero has described.
The caveats
The descriptions come from Xero’s own release and blog. Xero has not published pricing for the connected app or defined which plans will be eligible for scheduled tasks, and the claim to be first is the company’s own. Google’s subscription tiers and app availability are set by Google, not Xero.
